You described your idea, and a working app appeared. Screens, buttons, a database, even a login page, in an afternoon. For a while, every prompt made it better.

Then progress stopped. Fixes started breaking other things. The app works in the preview but not when you share the link. And the distance between "this demo" and "something my customers can use" refuses to shrink, no matter how many prompts you spend on it.

If that sounds familiar, nothing went wrong. You have hit the most predictable wall in AI-assisted development, and it helps to understand why it exists.

Why the First 70% Is So Fast

Tools like Replit and Bolt are extraordinary at the beginning of a project, for a simple reason: the beginning is mostly construction.

Setting up a project, creating screens, wiring a form to a database, adding a login page: these are well-trodden patterns the AI has seen thousands of times. There is no legacy code to respect, no users to avoid breaking, and the only test that matters is "does the happy path work when I click through it?"

Under those conditions, an AI agent is faster than any human team. That speed is real, and it is worth something: at 70%, you have a working proof of your idea that would have cost real money to reach any other way.

Why the Last 30% Is Different Work

The last 30% is not more of the same, only harder. It is a different kind of work:

Edge cases. What happens when a payment fails, a form is submitted twice, or a user types something unexpected? The happy path is one path; production is all of them.
Security that holds. A login page is not the same as an app that is actually secure. Real security lives on the server (every endpoint checking who is asking) and it is invisible in a demo.
Data that survives. Prototypes often keep data somewhere convenient rather than somewhere durable. Production needs a real database, backups, and a plan for changing the data structure without losing anything.
Deployment. The environment your app was built in is forgiving. The environment it must run in is not: secrets, build settings, domains, and third-party services all need to be configured deliberately.
Consistency. A hundred small decisions (loading states, error messages, mobile layouts) that make software feel dependable instead of fragile.

None of these are single features you can prompt for. They are cross-cutting concerns that touch many files at once, exactly the kind of change AI agents handle worst, because each edit is made from a partial view of the project and nothing catches a fix that quietly undoes an earlier one.

The Loop That Eats Your Evenings

This is also why the end of an AI-built project so often turns into a loop: you report a bug, the agent fixes it, the fix breaks something else, and three rounds later the original bug is back.

The agent is not being careless. It is answering each message in isolation, without the accumulated understanding a developer builds by living with a codebase, and without a test suite standing guard over everything that already works. Past a certain project size, the loop is structural. More prompting does not escape it; it feeds it.

What Finishing Actually Takes

The good news: finishing is a known process, not a mystery. It looks like this.

First, an audit. Someone reads the whole codebase and writes down what actually exists: what is solid, what is half-built, and what is quietly dangerous. Most stuck projects have never had this done, which is why every estimate so far has felt like a guess.

Second, foundations. A real database with backups, secrets handled properly, a deployment that can be repeated, and tests around the parts that keep breaking. This is what stops the loop.

Third, hardening. Server-side security on every endpoint, validation on every input, and honest handling of every failure the app can hit.

Fourth, the launch checklist. Emails that arrive, monitoring that tells you when something breaks, a mobile experience that holds up, and the boring pages every real product needs.

Notice what is not on the list: a rebuild. A stuck prototype is not wasted work. It is a working specification of what you want, which is the most expensive part of software to get right. Finishing preserves that value; starting over throws it away.

Your Options From Here

If you enjoy this kind of work, you can absolutely finish it yourself: the list above is the map, and there is no step on it that is beyond a determined founder with time.

If your time is better spent on the business, that is exactly what our production-readiness service is for. It starts with a $500 Production Readiness Audit: within 72 hours you get a straight answer on what is broken, what is safe, and a fixed price and timeline for going to production. The fee is credited 100% toward the build and refundable until the kickoff call, so the answer itself is the only thing you are ever paying for.

One thing worth knowing about how we do that finishing work: we build with AI too. It is why our first drafts are fast as well. The difference is what happens after the draft. Models from different families review each change, and an engineer decides what ships. The full pipeline is written up on how we build for production.

We have also written tool-specific diagnosis guides that go deeper on the failure modes above: for Replit apps, Bolt apps, Lovable apps, and v0 projects. Find the one that sounds like yours. The fix is usually smaller than it feels.
